The work in WP1 & 2 will be supported by a fundamental investigation in WP3 conducted by Professor Peter Oppeneer of Uppsala University situated in the Department of Physics, Angstrom Laboratory. Prof. Oppeneer's research field is computational theoretical physics, with an emphasis on research topics within solid state physics and the theory of magnetism with particular specialization and 14 years research experience in the theory of magneto-optical spectra.

Prof. Oppeneer has recently completed an extensive monograph (200 pages) on the theory of magneto-optical spectra, which appeared in the Handbook of Magnetic Materials, Vol. 13, edited by K.H.J. Buschow (Elsevier, Amsterdam, 2001). This monograph surveys the developments within the first-principles theory of magneto-optics of the last decade. In addition, he has published 45 research articles in the field of magneto-optics, which, taken together, have contributed significantly to the current understanding of magneto-optical spectra. Prof. Oppeneer is a major figure in his field, has organized or co-organized four international conferences. Further duties include regular teaching of physics courses at various levels of university education. Indeed it is difficult to conceive of a more qualified candidate to oversee the type of fundamental study required in WP3. Prof. Oppeneer plans to appoint a post doctoral researcher qualified in theoretical/computational physics in a course of full time study on the project.
